According to Xu Jingtao, marketing director of Datang Mobile, China Mobile has built about 14000 TD base stations in eight cities across China; China Telecom has built 240 in Baoding; and China Netcom has set up 413 in Qingdao. This has made the total TD base station number in China reach 14772, covering ten Chinese cities of Beijing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Qingdao and Baoding.

Xue also said that China’s TD technology had proceeded from R5 to R7 and MBMS mobile phone television service is being experimented with by China’s Ministry of Information Industry ¡ª China Mobile is expected to soon put it into commercial operation. MBMS refers to Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service, which can be used via GSM and UMTS cellular networks and utilizes multicast distribution in the core network instead of point-to-point links for the receiving devices.

Communications management departments criticized and punished 50 service providers and ordered 15 companies that had engaged in serious infringement to straighten out their respective businesses. The concerned telecom enterprises terminated cooperation with 96 service providers by stopping the settlement service with them or closing down their service access.

Of the total illegal service providers, 69 were China Mobile’s, 64 were China Unicom’s, eight were China Telecom’s and five were China Netcom’s. Among them, Shenzhen Huadong Feitian Network Technology Development Company, Beijing Hualu Yidong Technology Development Company, Hanghzou Caitong Network Technology Company, Beijing Longbo Gaotong Technology Company, Beijing Xinqi Shijie Communicaitions Technology Company, Beijing Guozhengtong Network Technology Company, Guagnzhou Qitai Communications Engineering Company, Guangzhou Mingzhi Computer Technology Company, Guagnzhou Zhenyin Network Technology Company, Guangzhou Kaihan Information Technology Company, Beijing Aiweixun Communications Technology Company, Beijing Tianying Jiuzhou Network Technology Company, Hunan Zhongyu Technology Company, Beijing Lianxin Yongyi Technology Company, Jiangsu Sanling Technology Company were asked to stop their business for rectification.

PCCW said that the rental sum for the service center would vary from RMB28.1 million in the first year to RMB43.1 million in the last year and it would include the annual rent, service fee, tax and electricity surcharge. Guangdong Netcom has offered a 5% discount for PCCW.

PCCW said that the agreement with Guangdong Netcom would enable it to provide stable and reliable service for its customers and help it to realize its business goal and enhance its core businesses.

According to an announcement of China Netcom’s Hong Kong listed company, China Netcom aims to be a leading broadband communications and multi-media service provider in China by 2010. In addition, the company plans to renovate its copper cable in some parts of China and increase use of fiber cable to upgrade its network quality.

China Telecom has already begun testing FTTH on a trial basis in four Chinese cities of Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuhan and Shanghai. Though China Netcom has never disclosed its progress in FTTH, it is rumored that the company has already started the service in Tianjin where more than 100 cable information sites were formed by the end of last year.

Ling Xin is a comprehensive instant communications service that is available to all of China Netcom’s users. With this service, users can enjoy the instant communications service any time they like through multiple means including Little Smart short message, broadband PCs and the upcoming 3G client terminal. All this can be done between mobile phones, or between a mobile phones and PCs.

Just like China Mobile’s Fetion service, China Netcom’s Ling Xin also showcases interoperability among different means of communications.

China Netcom has launched Ling Xin as a value-added service to Little Smart. Some analysts quoted in local media say that China Netcom has entered the instant communications market at this very time to experiment on possible 3G services and accumulate experience for the upcoming roll-out 3G in China.

Chinese market research company iResearch data shows that income from China’s instant communication market reached RMB670 million in 2006 and it will increase by more than 20% in the coming years and reach RMB1.44 billion by 2010.
