The new dashboard feature of Simple Storage Service (S3) promises greater insight into object storage usage. This will help users cut costs and improve security.
Amazon S3 Storage Lens was launched by Amazon Web Services (AWS), this week. It is “the first cloud storage analytics tool to give you organization-wide visibility in object storage, with point–in-time metrics, trend lines, as well as actionable suggestions,” AWS stated in its announcement.
It is designed to help users better manage their AWS cloud storage environments, which can span multiple accounts and regions, as well as S3 buckets. The goal is to help them “discover anomalies and identify cost efficiencies, and apply data protection best practice.”
Amazon S3 Storage Lens can be activated via the S3 console. The default dashboard view allows users to examine their storage activity and usage using 15 metrics. It offers a “summary view”, a cost efficiency view, and a data protection view.
Users can upgrade to the “Advanced” edition for an additional fee. This version offers 29 metrics, 15 months data retention, and a Recommendations feature. It suggests actions users can take to lower storage costs or better protect data based upon their storage habits.
You can also export data from Amazon S3 Storage Lens into an S3 bucket. This allows users to use additional analysis tools from other AWS services, such as QuickSight, Redshift, Athena, and QuickSight.
