How can you get into another industry as project manager?
This question was recently posed to me by someone from the film industry. ?The resume I was referred looked more like a filmography listing to this post-production supervisor.
Similar to the above, I met a cousin while in Denver for PMI Global Congress a few years back and learned that she is an Event Planner. I shared a bit of her work with her, and she told me a little about my job. She was a project manager but didn’t view her work that way. ?I was in the exact same place years ago, running projects without really thinking about them as such…?
Concentrate on the CONTENT and not the CONTEXT
We all share something in common: a focus on the context and exclusion of the content of our day to day work.
I’ve written about project management resumes before. I believe that the most important thing is to step back and evaluate your own project management experience.
“I urge that you reframe your film experience in terms of project management. I’m willing to bet that you managed stakeholders, including customers, sponsors, team members, and sponsors. I’ll bet that you managed the scope, schedule, and budget. I’m sure you can give me an idea of the budget you managed.
Some people may not have any experience in project management but act as if they do. This is evident in the PMP and other certifications that are not based on relevant experience. ? (Please note that projects around the house are not considered PM experience.
Others have 20+ years experience doing the same things project managers do, but in a different environment. You are a project manager …. I don’t care who you call it.
Don’t underestimate or undervalue the value of your own achievements and experiences. One of the many topics I cover with my PM Career Coaching Course, is how to accurately assess your starting point, create a career plan, and then execute on those plans.
What do you think? Have you ever made the transition from film or events planning to project management? Are you trying to do this now?
