EnterpriseDB Puts Postgres Database-as-a-Service on AWS EnterpriseDB today announced its Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) framework is available on the AWS Marketplace, simplifying Postgres deployments in the cloud. The 2.0 version of the tool, called EDB Postgres Ark is based on EDB Ark DBaaS, the company’s previous product. It was launched last year and only supported Red Hat OpenStack. However, it promises more deployment options in future. The ability to target Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS cloud) was the result. “EDB Postgres Ark gives operational administrators control over a Postgres 9.6, 9.5, or 9.4 based DBaaS. This allows them to free DBAs and developers from the rigors associated with setting up and managing modern, robust databases environments.” The item description is available on the AWS Marketplace. EDB Ark can quickly set up a single instance of a highly available database cluster or a cluster with multiple instances. It includes automatic failover, secure data encryption and user-scheduled backups. Point in time recovery is also possible. According to Wikipedia, Postgres is an object-relational database, (ORDBMS), i.e. An RDBMS with additional (optional) ‘object’ features, with an emphasis on extensibility. According to a huge, comprehensive survey of developers published by Stack Overflow, open source databases are popular among developers. It was just 0.1 percent ahead of the No. 3 in the most popular database category and ranked No. 2 in the “most beloved” category. EnterpriseDB claims that Ark DBaaS’s framework reduces the risk and cost of configuring Postgres in private, hybrid, and public cloud deployments. This facilitates DevOps implementations. It acts as a bridge between operations, development, and DBAs and speeds up application development. The company also lists other benefits:
You can manage multiple PostgreSQL and EDB Postgres Advanced Server deployments in multiple clouds. This allows you to maintain external flexibility for system uptime, and workload optimization. A console and APIs allow you to quickly create a variety of Postgres deployments. These can range from single instance development and boxes to production clusters with high…
