Ericsson enlists AWS to Telecom Service Provider Cloud Transformation Ericsson, the telecom giant, is joining forces with Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), in a broad-based effort to help service providers migrate to the cloud. Ericsson has relationships with all major telecom providers and provides services, software, and infrastructure products to these customers through an army of 115,000 professionals. Ericsson will dedicate approximately 25,000 R&D engineers to assist providers in leveraging the cloud to run at least some of their traditional datacenter operations. 66,000 service professionals will also be available to assist with system integrations and consulting. It anticipates undertaking 1,500 projects annually. The company released this statement this week: “Ericsson will use AWS’ expertise and services to work closely with service provider to implement a cloud adopting framework that fits their unique business objectives.” Ericsson’s team will include program directors, solution architects, and system engineers who have been trained in AWS and Ericsson technologies. They also bring together deep cloud domain and service provider industry expertise. Ericsson is supported by AWS with a wide range of resources, including solutions architects, professional services, and training. The companies’ efforts aim to accelerate cloud adoption by implementing cloud transformation programs, datacenter consolidation, and application migration. Ericsson stated that the partnership was designed to assist providers in increasing efficiency and agility, reducing risk, and speeding up innovation in rapidly growing technology areas like the cloud, mobility, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The partnership will bring new capabilities and offerings to the market.

End-to-end security, data traffic management and data transmission management from mobile networks and on premise infrastructure to the AWS cloud.
Trusted cloud and workload management for both on-premises infrastructure as well as the AWS cloud
Gateway services for AWS storage services located at communications service providers to help maintain local regulation.

Terry Wise, AWS executive, stated that service providers are experiencing explosive growth because of the rapid adoption mobile applications and IoT. This is driving the need for new ways to think about infrastructure and ecosystems. “Communications service provider are uniquely positioned for the cloud adoption wave that is currently taking place in the market. Ericsson’s Cloud Innovation Centers leverage AWS service and expertise to empower communications service providers to accelerate innovation in their organizations and quickly achieve the agility, cost optimization, and cost optimization benefits AWS offers. Telstra will be the first to open a Cloud Innovation Center. It will be located in Melbourne, Australia.
