Not to be taken lightly, the negative responses below! These are just examples of subtext that you can look for. I don’t think anyone would say these things to you, even if they are thinking the same thing.
Are you ready to answer the questions? These questions can help you find the right person for your next project team member. These questions can be used to help project managers looking for work.
1. What do you not want to do?
Reason to ask: While there are many jobs we don’t like, project managers usually work on the projects they are assigned.
While it’s fine to have your own preferences, the company is looking to hire someone who can meet business needs regardless of whether that’s not their preferred project.
Bad response: “I like to pick the projects that I work on, but I only really want the digital media ones.” That’s OK, isn’t it?”
Yes, I have met project managers who believed it was okay for them to pick their assignments.
2. How would you rate project management as a career?
Reason to ask: This will let you know how they value their career, and if they see themselves moving up to a PM position. Ask them why they chose this rating. This question can be used as part of your interview questions for junior project managers. This is a simple question to ask and you will hopefully get enthusiastic answers!
Candidate tips: Be prepared to explain why you are saying what you want. Maybe it’s because you are passionate about helping others achieve a common goal or because you just can’t resist getting involved in difficult projects. Perhaps your past experience in project management has made you feel like this career is the right fit.
Bad Response: “I’d score that a 1 because it’s just a filler job before I can get a real job.”
Follow up: Make sure you ask them why they give it that score.
3. What is the most important thing a project manager should do?
Asking is a good idea. It will reveal their priorities and show you if they have ever thought about the role of a project manager. Good candidates might talk about building relationships and interpersonal skills with key stakeholders or sharing examples from past projects.
When hiring a project manager, you want someone who not only understands the process but also shares the same values and work ethic as your company.
This question is a great way for you to find out if they would be a good fit for your company culture.
